I was kinda skeptical about having a home inspection. My first thought was it was likely going to be a waste of time and money. Wow... now I know why it is so important. You were right when you said the heat exchanger in that type of furnace was known for premature failure of the heat exchanger. I just saved $2500 or more on a new furnace. The home seller had to replace the furnace becouse the heat exchanger was cracked as you suspected.
